Martial Arts Program Information
As students advance through the program they will learn proper techniques and how to use their skills in a responsible way. Class activities include talk sessions, practical instruction, light-contact sparring, and katas. Athletes also learn competition rules and regulations in preparation for martial arts tournaments.
Sparring is light-contact controlled fighting and is highly recommended for all students advancing in CFA martial arts programs. Sparring gives students a chance to practically apply various techniques within a carefully monitored environment.
Also called “forms”, Katas are pre-arranged martial arts techniques combined together in a floor pattern designed to represent a fight with an imaginary attacker. As students advance, they will be taught the practical application of katas.
Along with talking sessions, students are taught short, self-defense techniques called wazas. These hands-on applications teach self-control, distancing, and body mechanics, and are practiced from standing and ground fighting positions.
Students are evaluated at the end of each semester. Based on that evaluation, students have the opportunity to advance in belt rank. Students build on their progress from year to year and can eventually earn their black belt and beyond.
